Design Concept

Folding chairs are often relegated to temporary functions therefore its versatility and visual aesthetics are usually ignored.  The ‘Outdoor Lounge’ aims to change this conventional way of designing foldable chairs and provides a new approach to cool and comfortable outdoor (or indoor) seating.  We designed the chair with comfort and aesthetics in mind and came up with a classic wooden chair that also provides great lumbar support.  It consists of an intricately cut Birch body with Redwood slats gently attached to its thin edges with wooden dowels.

The foldable qualities of the chair relies on joinery and origami techniques used to fold thick materials. We implemented offsets to incorporate the gold-plated hinges which allows the chair to deploy to a standard height and dimensions of a typical lounge chaire and can flatten and be stored when not in use.
