Design Concept

Upon visiting the Case Study House of Charles and Rey Eames, this studio focused on typical steel construction methods to develop a residential house combined with a public art gallery to replace the Eames Case Study House. The existing site conditions  of a plot of land covered with giant Willow trees and inspiration from Lacaton & Vassal’s Cap Ferret House and Go Hasegawa’s ‘Pilotis in the Forest’ led to the design of the table in the woods.

The preservation of the existing landscape is held with high regard and the positioning of the residential structure is meant to provide a home among the Willow trees. Underneath the table structure is a secured but open public space exhibiting the ‘Acrylic Columns’ of Robert Irwin--which similarly provides another opportunity to be within nature. A structural table supports the smaller, moment-framed structures above--enveloped with glass and standing-seam cladding. The structure as a whole is attached to the ground with helical pier foundations, is naturally ventilated, and includes radiant heating embedded within the concrete floors.
